NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan’s Rami Hamdan took second in the shot put and the 4 x 800 relay team finished third as the Rams finished tied for seventh in team scoring at Saturday’s State Open Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Hamdan, a senior, threw the shot put 50 feet, 3 ½ inches. Jacob Tomcazk of Derby won with a throw of 51 feet, 9 ½ inches.

The Rams finished with 14 points, while Staples won the meet with 47. They were led by the 4 x 800 relay of Henson Orser, Kalan Lysenko, Isaiah Maisonette and Alexi Spinu, who shaved more than three seconds off of their previous best and ran 8:10:97. Simsbury won in a state record 8:04:16, followed by Naugatuck.

Isabel Hetherington finished ninth in the 1,600, running nearly two seconds better than her previous time. Senior Stephanie Benko finished 13th in the 3,200 after winning the Class L championship just a few days before.

In the boys 55 meter hurdles, Devaun Bovell narrowly missed earning a point when he finished seventh in 7.95. New Canaan also competed in the boys 4 x 400 relay.

The top finishers will compete in the New England championships on March 2. Complete results of the State Open are available online.
